Neptune's kitchen: Dolphins are talented chefs →
“Dolphins are the chefs of the seas, having been seen going through precise and elaborate preparations to rid cuttlefish of ink and bone to produce a soft meal of calamari, Australian scientists say. “It’s a sign of how well their brains are developed. It’s a pretty clever way to get pure calamari without all the horrible bits,” Mark Norman, the curator of mollusks at...

Me: I don't know what was going on, but there was a huge crowd of students outside the building yesterday awhile after classes were over.
Brittany: Yeah, and one of them had blood pouring down his arm.
Amy: What happened?
Me: We don't know, maybe he fell.
Brittany: Or got hit by a car, or got into a fight. But his arm was covered in blood.
Amy: Good thing there wasn't a vampire around!
Young Muslims Build a Subculture on an Underground... →
“Five years ago, young Muslims across the United States began reading and passing along a blurry, photocopied novel called “The Taqwacores,” about imaginary punk rock Muslims in Buffalo. “This book helped me create my identity,” said Naina Syed, 14, a high school freshman in Coventry, Conn. A Muslim born in Pakistan, Naina said she spent hours on the phone listening to her older sister read...

While learning about a visit to the doctor...
Sydney: "Di aaaaaah"... What does "aaaaaah" mean?
Me: Are you serious?
Sydney: What does "aaaaaah" mean? I don't get it.
Me: Did she seriously just ask that? Twice?!?!
Trenton: It means "aaaaaah", stupid! You know, like "stick out your tongue and say aaaaaah!"
Rowan: Señora, does it make you feel like an unsuccessful Spanish teacher when we ask stupid questions like that?
Me: Honestly, sometimes, yes it does.
Sydney: Yeah, but "aaaaaah" isn't even a Spanish word, it's an English one.

Marco: (mumbling) Just tell me what you think about it.
Tiff: What I think about it? What I think about what?
Marco: (mumbling)The icons. The new icons. Tell me what you think about the icons.
Tiff: You're dreaming about icons?
Marco: (sleeping again)

Local Students See History Unfold →
These are my students. I was in the theater all day with my classes. What a rush, to be watching the events with hundreds of students and staff, all of us just spilling over with enthusiasm. (If you watch the video through the link, I’m the one in the pink sparkly tunic with my back to the camera, jumping up and down with excitement.)
Okay, I’m going to bed now — too tired to...

Israel Strike Hits U.N. Building in Gaza Strip →
“Israeli forces shelled areas deep inside Gaza City on Thursday, hitting the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and injuring at least three people among the hundreds sheltering in the compound, according to United Nations officials and witnesses. The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, said that Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak had told him the strike on...

You're better with age.
playnice:
You’ll always be you, no matter what age you are. You’ll look different and you’ll behave differently but you’ll still be unmistakably, wonderfully you. You can embrace each birthday each day (each second!) as progress in your personal evolution. You’re wiser than before.
Today remind yourself: I’m better with age.

Washington diary: While Gaza burns →
“By mostly avoiding comment, or by making bland expressions of concern about civilian deaths, Obama is playing a political game: remaining careful not to upset Israel and its many powerful supporters in and out of the US congress, while at the same time giving hope to Arabs who are desperately anxious that Obama will usher in a new chapter in US policy toward the Middle East.
Obama says he...
On the bright side...
I have been sick for two and a half days now. Really sick. All sorts of stomach virus yuckiness that does not need further detail. I am dizzy and exhausted, every part of me hurts, and I’m frustrated that I had to leave my students with a substitute for two days (at least she is a very good sub). I even had to go to the doctor today. I haven’t been to a GP in years.
But it’s...
Scores killed as Gaza school hit →
“Israeli strikes have killed at least 40 people who took refuge inside a UN school in the Gaza Strip, medics have said. The strike on Tuesday hit a school run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, in the northern town of Jabaliya. Doctors said all the dead were either people sheltering in the school or residents of Jabalya refugee camp, in the north of the Gaza Strip.

Feliz Día de los Tres Reyes Magos!

I know it’s not celebrated here but this is quite a big deal where I come from. It’s as big as Christmas actually. Instead of leaving out candy the night before, we’d leave out hay in a box for the Kings’ camels and the Kings would leave presents. Oh and it’s an official holiday so no work or school.
Yup, you read that right!
So yea, Happy Three Kings,...

Brains... Brains...
I ate half of a lamb’s brain the other night (along with parts of its tongue, cheek, and of course the more conventional muscley parts). My Jordanian friends invited me over for a feast to celebrate a birthday. I’ve had cow’s brain before, cooked in tortellini, but this was the first time I’d had brain pretty much straight out of the (cooked) skull.
It was so creamy,...
Game Nights
tiffany:
This year, I really want to start a monthly game night as a potential on-going open-to-all meet-up event. I’m thinking different board games, teams, pizza, beer, fun, competition. Think about it.
I love it. I would drive down on occasion to join in the fun!
