I just taught my mother how to use Amazon Wish Lists

This might cut down on some traditional holiday laughter, but should improve the gift-buying experience for ALL involved.

Watching Brigadoon for the umpteenth time

While working on my current doll project.

Really, is there a more satisfying way to spend a rainy Sunday morning?

Did Cooking Give Humans An Evolutionary Edge? → npr.org

“Cooking, it turns out, is a uniquely human thing, but my next guest says it’s not just unique to humans, it’s essential. It’s what made us human, and he argues that this custom of cooking our food has not only changed our bodies over the years, giving us smaller mouths and smaller guts, he says it’s given us an evolutionary advantage: bigger brains, more time to use those brains and less time wasting time foraging and chewing all day long.”

I haven't worn socks in so long

that I’m not really sure where they all are. Really, I think that, since mid-May, I have maybe worn socks only a half-dozen times. Now it’s late September, we’re starting to get frost advisories here in the Northeast, and it’s nearly time to put away my sandals for the year.

Which means it’s also time to find my socks again.

Teachers

Why it’s stressful: You can teach kindergarteners to graduate students and you’ll still be dealing with a bunch of pupils who need your attention, guidance and wisdom. Teaching duties are never confined to traditional office hours, either.

Why it’s worth it: It’s a cliché, but it’s true that you’re changing lives every day. Plus, you can see students mature and learn right before your eyes — that’s pretty amazing.

“Newt Gingrich, who in 2007 called bilingual education “the language of living in the ghetto” and in 1995 argued that bilingualism poses “long-term dangers to the fabric of our nation,” has now launched a bilingual website, The Americano, to attract Hispanic voters to the GOP.” —

An open letter to all meth heads

Dear meth heads of the world,

You officially all suck. Thanks to you and your DIY meth labs which are a plague upon this region, I can’t get proper Sudafed after the pharmacies close, and here, they close early. So now it’s 9:30 pm, I am suffering through a nasty head cold, all I want is some proper Sudafed to clear my congestion, and I can’t get the real stuff! Yeah, yeah, I know I can get Sudafed without pseudoephedrine in it still OTC anytime the stores are open. But really, what is Sudafed without pseudoephedrine? It’s CRAP, that’s what it is, C-R-A-P!!!

So meth heads, now, not only are you responsible for rising crime rates, vicious addictions, and labs in your trailers that put my husband and other first responders at risk, but now I also place full responsibilty of my stuffy nose on YOU!

Up yours.

Q: Why do Americans seem to have a limited knowledge of world geography and world affairs?

A: In the last few decades, many American schools have not placed a great emphasis on world geography. Although there are opportunities for Americans to learn about world affairs, busy lifestyles may not always allow people to have as much time to read or listen to international news as they may need. There is a fairly limited amount of international news in most American newspapers. The Pittsburgh Summit 2009 has given people in the Pittsburgh region a great opportunity to learn more about current economic issues. We value the opportunity to talk with the international visitors in our community. There are excellent links to information about the G-20 at www.pittsburghg20.org. Another reason is that this is a huge, isolated country. We have English speakers to the north and Spanish to the south. Americans often do not travel outside the country but prefer to stay closer to home. The country has such variety that people do not feel the need to go too far. Foreign languages are not emphasized either.

Shalom and Salaam

Since we have the near-coinciding of Rosh Hashanna and Eid al-Fitr this year, I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of my Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters here on Tumblr very blessed and joyful holidays!

tiffany:

I have the urge to drive upstate and take photos of girls in gowns running through hayfields.   Go ahead, judge me.

Come on up! You and me and Tara can all put on pretty dresses and go frolic. We might have to wait a week or two until fall really starts to set in :)
