lemdi asked: Hi! So I was sent to you (via annaetc) with a question I had. I've started to lose my Spanish, which makes me sad, and I'm looking for some high school reading level books to try to bring myself back up to speed. Problem: I'm in Canada, and Spanish language collections are relatively small even in my big-city library, so it'll have to be pretty popular titles for me to be able to find them. Any suggestions?
Hi, thanks so much for writing! Actually, I would totally reccomend popular titles, especially young adult or children’s titles you already know in English. Perhaps, for example, you could try Harry Potter, Twilight, Chronicles of Narnia, or even Dr. Seuss and the like! I often use familiar titles with my students. This way, they don’t have to worry about trying to figure out plot — just focus on vocabulary and grammar. You can look online as well for Spanish-language newspapers. Try reading about a current event in English, then search for articles about the same event in Spanish. Same deal — you’ll already know the story, so just work on polishing your vocabulary & grammar. And overall, try surrounding yourself with as much of the language as you can. Go to YouTube and search for Spanish-language cartoons, or even watch Dora the Explorer. Listen to Spanish music. Try watching a familiar movie, but put on Spanish subtitles. If you have Spanish speaking friends or family, ask them to speak to you only in Spanish for a few hours. The language will come back to you! I hope this helps, and please feel free to ask me anything else :) Buena suerte —
