I wear the headscarf part-time. I don’t wear it at work, but I do wear it in many other aspects of my life. For me, putting on the hijab isn’t necessarily about fulfilling any sort of religious obligation. It’s more about creating, for lack of better terminology, good PR for Islam and for Muslims. God willing, when I’m out and about in my hijab, I’ll interact with people in a positive manner. God willing, they’ll see me as polite, articulate, and outgoing. They’ll hear my American accent and hear me talk about normal, everyday American things. Then, God willing, they’ll go home that night and say to their spouse, their kids, thier friends or coworkers, “You know, I met this Muslim woman today who was actually pretty cool.” And God willing, little by little, people’s attitudes will begin to change.
That’s why I wear the actual headscarf.
The reasons why I practice other aspects of hijab (dressing, speaking, and behaving modestly), well, that’s a whole other post for another time.
