Sister Pearl's World RSS

Hi. I'm Marco's sister. Those of you who don't know me can call me Pearl. When I was nineteen, I bit into a pearl in a fried oyster in some linoleum-floored crab shack on Cape Cod.

I'm a recovering graduate student, high school Spanish teacher, unrepentant history geek, and budding mystic. I've traveled to four of the seven continents. I always love to discuss politics, religion, history, and philosophy. In my other life, I'm also a wife with really poor housekeeping skills. But I can cook.

Growing stuff

I’m gardening this weekend. I will attempt to grow a few varieties of tomatoes, a few different kinds of hot peppers, and some marigolds. I’ve never gardened before — indeed, the only plant I ever managed to keep alive was an aloe — so I don’t really know what I’m getting myself into.

Today, I have been cleaning out all the beds. The previous owner of our home was a gardener extraordinaire, so we have all of his old beds all over our yard. That makes my task so much easier. I’m taking a break at the moment because I found a little black and yellow snake asleep in one of the beds. I wanted to come inside and do a little research to make sure it is a friendly snake. From what I can tell, it’s just a wee garter snake, totally harmless.

I figure, this weekend, I’ll do the tomatoes, peppers, and marigolds. Next weekend, I will clear out some of the beds along the sides and try a few varieities of mint, some basil, cilantro, and chives. And of course, a rosemary bush!  I really hope this goes well. Hopefully I’ll be able to post pictures of my progress.
