Sister Pearl's World RSS

Hi. I'm Marco's sister. Those of you who don't know me can call me Pearl. When I was nineteen, I bit into a pearl in a fried oyster in some linoleum-floored crab shack on Cape Cod.

I'm a recovering graduate student, high school Spanish teacher, unrepentant history geek, and budding mystic. I've traveled to four of the seven continents. I always love to discuss politics, religion, history, and philosophy. In my other life, I'm also a wife with really poor housekeeping skills. But I can cook.

You can’t whitewash the planet into good and evil, into terrorists and non-terrorists. Ten years from now, that will ensure chaos.

M.I.A. (via keepinganotebook)

M.I.A. has been a favorite of mine for several years now. Her music is fierce, and her lyrics are scathing with uncomfortable truths. (See, just for starters, the lyrics to “Pull Up the People”, “Sunshowers”, “$20”, and “Hussel”) Whenever I hear my students borderline worshipping Lil Wayne and the like, I always try to steer them towards artists like M.I.A. or Flii Stylz. As I always put it, “Try some music that moves beyond ‘bitches and bling’.” And, As M.I.A. says in her article, sometimes there is pressure not to be so outspoken, but “that’s what happens when you sing about something other than ‘my humps, my humps, my humps.’”
