Sister Pearl's World RSS

Hi. I'm Marco's sister. Those of you who don't know me can call me Pearl. When I was nineteen, I bit into a pearl in a fried oyster in some linoleum-floored crab shack on Cape Cod.

I'm a recovering graduate student, high school Spanish teacher, unrepentant history geek, and budding mystic. I've traveled to four of the seven continents. I always love to discuss politics, religion, history, and philosophy. In my other life, I'm also a wife with really poor housekeeping skills. But I can cook.

The Big Picture: Mississippi Floodwaters in Iowa
Much of my city — including my neighborhood — looked like this exactly two years ago this week. Watching the Midwestern floods on the news has brought back many difficult memories. The folks in Iowa and the like have a long road ahead of them. But they’ll survive. My city came back. It took a lot of hard work and community cooperation, but we came back. And so can they.
It’s also a good idea to help out however you can. Voluteer your time, your money, or whatever, to the people who need it, whether it’s in the Midwest, in Myanmar, or in your own backyard. The feds weren’t much help to us — it was the community who really shined. So be a good community member and help yours out… however you define community.
